Then one of their rooster started crowing! He's been working his way up to it. Trying his voice out like one practicing for an opera. This morning he finally figured it out. I'm excited because it means they are growing up, which means we are that much closer to getting eggs from their hens.
As i was watering the grass (or something like grass, i mean it is a desert) i was watching the puppies. I love to watch the puppies play together, and with my dog, but there is not much cuter than puppies playing with a lamb. When my boys brought their puppies home, they took to my then pregnant lamb right away. They clean her face, especially her ears, and pull on her wool. She even lets them climb up on side. Since having the lamb, Starfire, (Here is where some of my geek comes out. Yup, i love Superheroes) Elsie does not see the puppies as the least bit of a threat to her lamb. Starfire will chase the puppies and headbutt them, and run and leap away, and then come running back for more.
Artemis, my half collie half golden retriever dog, loves to play with the puppies too. At first she wasn't sure what to do with them. Since she has figured out that they are for playing with, she has a grand time. I love when they are chasing each other. The will run away a little, and she will run big huge loops, and then come back to them. As they are getting bigger they try to keep up with her, but their legs are still too short. Today Artemis had a stick. Wolfey and Merlin were trying to chase her. She thought they wanted her stick. Merlin started after her and she quickly ran around the skirts on the palm tree. And there was Merlin still trying to get her stick, so she quickly ran around the tree again. Merlin and Wolfey were both there trying to get her stick. So she ran quicker around the tree, right back to the puppies. She started barking and growling a little to let them know it was her stick. Then she ran around the tree, this time in the other direction. But, she started to drop the stick, and broke it as she caught it. Then she was back to wrestling with the puppies.
My goat, Fauna, loves to stand on top of things to eat. She is a goat. I have this red milk crate that i feed them their hay in. She had it turned up on its side, and she precariously placed one hoof on it. Slowly, she placed the second, seeing if it would hold. Then her tail was happily swishing as she finally got to eat those leaves higher up the tree that she just couldn't reach before.
My victory today was the little garden space out the back door. When we moved in none of the soil was plantable. There are these little tuffs of grass that grow here and there, a ton of bushes, and a few trees. There was trash everywhere. It looked like there were several parties where they would throw their empty cans or glass bottles onto the ground, breaking them into as many pieces as possible. That, and that one of the previous occupants used the yard as their trash can. Not plantable. Pure sand and trash. The good news was that there is this little garden space just out the back door. So i've been adding stuff to it. This morning i turned the ground to see how it was coming. It is dirt! Brown, moist, full of organic matter dirt. Come this fall, i will have a space to plant a few things for my family to eat. I will tame this yard, sooner or later, and i will be victorious ; )
